Chennai: As per the media reports the Tamil Nadu government is mulling to approach the Supreme Court of India (SCI) demanding the Cauvery water management board to be set up with immediate effect. It comes after the laxity shown by the Central government over implementation of the SCI’s orders on the Cauvery waters dispute.
“We are discussing our next course of action and are sure about approaching the Supreme Court again, as the Center failed to implement the CMB as per Supreme Court’s orders,” Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar reportedly said.
The opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazagham (DMK) has criticised the state government under rivals All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham (AIADMK) for not pressing for the board.
“We condemn state and central government for not implementing the Supreme Court’s order,”reads the quote from the DMK’s resolution published in an English daily.
Meanwhile, the AIADMK’s own party cadre has decided to observe a fast on April 2 to press for the Board. Both the state of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are engaged in decades old cauvery river water sharing dispute.
On February 16th, the SCI ordered the Union government to set up a the Cauvery Water Management Board. The SCI’s six-week deadline for setting up the board passed without any action on Thursday.
But the BJP lead central government seems to be reluctant in carrying out the SCI’s order to set up a Water Management board as the state of Karnataka is scheduled to go on polls in May. Because of which it is often alleged by the Tamil Nadu that in order to safeguard its electoral prospects in the poll bound state, the BJP is playing partisan to Karnataka.
