February 29, 2016 | By

New York: US Congress members have recently written a letter to Indian Prime Minister raising serious concerns over treatment of religious minorities in Indian subcontinent. The letter, dated 25 Feb. 2016, also takes note of the fact that Sikh religion has been denied recognition as a distinct religion in India.

“We want to raise additional concerns about the lack of recognition of Sikhism as a distinct religion…” US lawmakers note in their letter to Narendra Modi.

The US lawmakers have also raised concerns about recent incidents of Beadbi of Guru Granth Sahib and the killing of two Sikhs by Punjab police in police firing Behbal Kalan village near Kotkapura on Oct. 14 last year.

The letter reads: “Sikh community members reportedly are harassed and pressured to reject religious practices and beliefs distinct to Sikhism. On October 14, security forces killed two Sikhs and injured scores of others in Punjab who were protesting peacefully against the desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib”.
