India: SC issued notice to CBI on Bhai Hawara’s petition against conviction & sentence; CBI want death for him

New Delhi, India (July 19, 2013): As per media reports the Supreme Court of India sought response from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on a petition moved by Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara challenging his conviction and life imprisonment in the Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh assassination case. Punjab CM Beant Singh was killed in a bomb blast on 31 August, 1995.

Australia: Couple jailed for racially abusing a Sikh taxi driver

Darwin, Australia (July 17, 2013): It is learnt that an Australian couple is jailed for nine months for attacking a Sikh taxi driver in Darwin who was racially abused, punched and had his turban ripped off his head. According to media reports Justice Stephen Southwood sentenced Angeline Kim Sollitt, 44, and Michael John Arbouin, 40 for the "unprovoked" and " malicious" attack on a Sikh taxi driver Jagroop Singh.

In a petition before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, while seeking security, Surjit Singh presented a list of 16 fake encounters.

Jalandhar, Punjab (July 16, 2013): The recent disclosures made by Punjab cop Sub-Inspector Surjit Singh has once again brought the issue of fake encounters and secret cremations in focus.
