Smith (PhD) and her research team at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California.

Custodial torture: Two women given electric shock by police in Bolath (Kapurthala)

Surjit Singh SI admits fake encounters in Punjab

SCI rules for independent probe into encounter killings; Punjab cases to be acid test for impact

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India (SCI), on Sept. 23, passed directions that each police encounter resulting in death should be thoroughly investigated by an investigative agency. The directions came in an order passed on a plea by the Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL). The SCI ruled that that there should be an investigation by an independent agency like the Crime Investigation Department in encounter cases.

SC judgement on police encounters strengthens safeguards against fake encounters, Amnesty India

New Delhi, India: In a statement sent to the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) the Amnesty International India has welcomed the Supreme Court's order detailing how all police encounters must be investigated in order to prevent and punish fake encounters, or staged extrajudicial executions.

Halifax Sikhs celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Komagata Maru

Halifax: This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the Komagata Maru ship which brought 376 passengers, primarily Sikhs, to Vancouver sea port in May 1914. They were not allowed to leave the ship by the British Columbia's Government and ship was forced to go back on July 23, 1914 after two months.

New Delhi: The President of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) Manjit Singh G.K. and general secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa today made public, an agreement done by DSGMC in February 10, 2005, by then General Manager under the president-ship of Paramjit Singh Sarna, by which it passed ownership of Master Tara Singh car parking at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib to New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) after 25 years.
