Sikh Response to Manchester Attack: Taxi Drivers serve free lifts, Gurdwaras Open gates to victims

Manchester/ London: A suicide bomb attack in Manchester reportedly took 22 lives, while 59 others sustained injuries. Media reports emanating from Manchester indicate that Sikhs promptly responded to this tragedy by offering humanitarian help to the victims.

As per social media reports, Sikh taxi drivers served free rides to those in need after the attack.

“Sikh Gurdwaras in Manchester are offering food and shelter to people left stranded by the bombing that struck young music fans as they left an Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena last night, The Metro reported.

‘A spokesperson for Everything’s 13, a Sikh educational charity, told us that Sikhs in the area were simply doing their duty’, reported The Metro.

An Everything’s 13 representative told Metro.co.uk: ‘‘The Gurdwaras of Manchester offering shelter and more to those impacted by the atrocities at the Manchester Arena are simply fulfilling their remit’.

‘Gurdwara means “Guru’s Door” and all are open to all people, regardless of faith, race or gender. The Sikh community has historically been one people in need could turn to. The Sikhs Gurus ordered Sikhs to ensure people have access to basic needs and freedom from oppression’.

‘It is up to [present] day Sikhs to ensure this continues and it is heartening to see the younger generation taking this responsibility, as we saw when many took to social media to encourage people to use Manchester’s Gurdwaras for shelter, as well as in the actions of Sikh taxi drivers who offered free rides across the city’.
