Pakistani Police Apologise After Sikh was Fined For Not Wearing Helmet

Lahore, Pakistan: Reports emanating from Peshawar in Pakistan note that the traffic police authorities in this city of Pakistan Thursday (January 24) apologised to the Sikh community after a Sikh motorcyclist was issued a challan for not wearing a helmet. The cops said that the challan was issued “mistakenly”.
A traffic warden had on Tuesday (January 23) issued the challan to the Sikh youth riding the motorcycle for non use of the helmet.

An official spokesperson said the authorities have tendered an apology to a delegation of the Sikhs, who brought the issue to their notice.
According to Peshawar SSP Traffic Kashif Zulfiqar, the warden who issued the challan was not aware that the Sikh community had been exempted from wearing helmets.
“As a precaution, a written directive will now be issued to all traffic wardens deployed in the city, cantonment and rural circles to avoid issuing challans to members of the community riding motorcycles in respect of their religious customs,” he added.
