Kesri Lehar petition to be handed over to British PM on December 10

London, England (December 02, 2012): It is learnt that the Kesri Lehar has prepared a petition regarding persistent human rights violations by Indian state. This petition also seeks abolition of death penalty in India.

According to information available with Sikh Siaysat News (SSN) the petition would be handed over to David Cameron, Prime Minister of United Kingdom at 10 Downing Street on 10 December, 2012 at 2:30 pm on the eve of United Nations Human Rights Day.

According to a press statement sent by Kesri Lehar organizers to Sikh Siyasat News (SSN), the petition has been signed by more than 1,18,000 citizens of United Kingdom who have expressed agreement with the terms of petition.

It is further learnt a delegation comprising six members of Kesri Lehar along with Members of the Parliament, Lords, representative of Amnesty International, Liberation UK, Punjabi Human Rights Internet UK would hand over the petition to the PM David Cameron. These organizations have raised the vital human rights issues at international level from time to time.

A public meeting is also scheduled to be held in room number 12 of House of the Commons from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm on December 10, 2012.

It is notable that Kesri Lehar was organized by Punjabis living in UK following the decision of a Chandigarh Court (India), in March 2012, to execute Balwant Singh Rajoana in Panjab, India.

The organizers of Kesri Lehar prepared a petition and started a signature campaign to seek abolition of death penalty in India.

Labour MP from Hayes and Harlingdon, John McDonnell supported the Kesri Lehar and presented an early motion that has been endorsed by 60 members of the House of Commons, including Select Committee Chair-persons, All Party Parliamentary Human Rights Group, All Party Group against Death Penalty and many former ministers.

MP John McDonnell said that this petition aims at holding debate in the Parliament and urging British Government to put pressure on Indian Union to sign “Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court”, “UN Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or Punishment”. He was hopeful that this petition shall be debated in the British Parliament in January 2013.
