Amritsar, Punjab (January 15, 2013): All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) President Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad has approached Sikh Gurudwara Judicial Commission and Akal Takhat Sahib against Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and it’s president Avtar Singh Makkar for their decision to participate in Kumbh Mela, a Hindu festival.

In documents sent to Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) AISSF president has maintained that SGPC’s decision to officially participate in the Kumbh Mela is clearly beyond the mandate of SGPC and in violation of Section 142 of the The Sikh Gurudwara Act of 1925. The Section 142 of the Act provides that any member of the Sikh community may file a complaint against any committee or its member on the charges of “abuse of power” or “malfeasance”.

“The decision of Avtar Singh Makkar to officially participate in Kumbh Mela is clearly misuse of the SGPC funds and resources. This is in clear violation of SGPC’s mandate and is not permissible under the Gurudwara Act,” he pointed.

Peermohammad has urged SGJC to issue an injunction ordering SGPC to withdraw its participation from Kumbh Mela and sack Avtar Singh Makkar for “abuse of power” and “malfeasance”.
