London: Sikh Council UK strongly condemns the suspected arson attack that took place at Guru Nanak Gurdwara Edinburgh early Tuesday morning (Aug. 29).
Sikh Council UK Chair of Community Safety Ravjeet Singh said “My colleague Jagtar Singh has been in contact with the President of Guru Nanak Gurdwara Edinburgh Bhai Kulbir Singh this morning to relay on sympathy and extend our offer of support. He has confirmed the damage has been contained to the entrance and adjoining areas but thankfully there is no damage to the darbar hall or Sri Sachkhand Sahib areas of the Gurdwara and no one has been injured because of the attack. We are also getting in touch with Police Scotland to convey the gravity of the community’s concerns over this attack and to seek assurance the investigation will fully pursue all lines of enquiry including race and religious hate crime.”
He added “This is the second such attack this year at a Gurdwara , this is a worrying development. We are urging all Gurdwara management committees to undertake safety audits to ensure that appropriate measures are in place to protect Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and other Sikh scriptures and to minimise damage to Gurdwara property in the event of such incidents. It is also important to have CCTV arrangements in place to assist in catching the perpetrators. The deadline for applications for the Government’s place of worship security grant scheme has recently closed but if any Gurdwara representatives have any questions or still wish to explore further funding opportunities we encourage them to get into contact with Sikh Council UK as soon as possible”.
