Detention of Sikh leaders: Bhai Daljit Singh and other released from Ludhiana Jail; others still behind the bars

Ludhiana, Punjab (April 16, 2012): During the Punjab bandh declared by various Sikh organizations protesting against the execution of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, a Sikh political prisoner at Central Jail Patiala, many Sikh leaders were arrested. Punjab government kept them under so-called “preventive detention”.

Sikh detainees, including Akali Dal Panch Pardhani head Bhai Daljit Singh and SAD (Delhi) leaders, who were kept at Central Jail Ludhaina were released yesterday.

The release of these leaders was welcomed by the Sikhs and many supporters had gathered around the Central Jail situated on Tajpur road to welcome them.

“Stay on hanging of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana is victory of collective efforts of the entire Sikh nation”, Sikh leaders told media persons outside Central Jail after their release. They emphasized the need to keep the pressurizing the Government to save Bhai Balwant Singh from gallows and secure his release.

It is notable that many Sikh leaders including Panch Pardhani Secretary General Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema and SGPC member Bhai Kulvir Singh Barapind are still behind the bars.
