Former SSF President Mandhir Singh arrested; Police remand for two days

Mansa (January 19, 2010): Mansa Police today produced Bhai Mandhir Singh, former President of Sikh Students Federation, before a Mansa Court. Police claimed to have arrested Bhai Mandhir Singh yesterday from Mansa Tin-Koni, while he was travelling to Mansa by Bus. Police has today named him under Dera follower Lilli Kumar’s Murder case, and demanded police remand for five days. Police claimed that it had procured warrants against Mandhir Singh along with one Tirlochan Singh Locha on 5 May, 2010. Advocate Ajit Singh Bhangu, who represented Bhai Mandhir Singh in the court, strongly opposed the police claims. He maintained that Tirlochan Singh has already been discharged from the case. He further claimed that Lili Kumar’s murder case is under trial since last one and half year; and there is no mention of Mandhir Singh’s name in the entire file. The court awarded two days police remands and has directed the police to produce Mandhir Singh 21 January.

Mandhir Singh is a B. Tech graduate from Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib. He also received an advanced diploma in Networking Engineering from Canada. He worked as SSF President from September 2004 to December 2006. He also studied Comparative Religion at Punjabi University, Patiala during this period. He contested Punjab Assembly’s election from Balachaur in 2007 at the ticket of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), and was currently active in socio-political and religious field. He is considered to be a prosperous candidate of SGPC election from his constituency.

SSF President Parmjeet Singh Gazi, who was present in the court complex, accused Punjab Government for falsely framing Sikh leaders in wake of upcoming SGPC election. He condemned the arrest of former SSF president in strong terms.

Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema, Secretary General of SAD (Panch Pardhani) accused Badal Government for misusing its’ powers and maintained that Mandhir Singh’s arrest is an attempt to keep Panthic Candidate away from the field of Panthic activity and SGPC elections.
