Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa writes to Akhilesh Yadav for release of Wariam Singh

Amb Sahib, Mohali (December 20, 2013): According to information available with the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) Bhai Gurbaksh Singh, who is on continuous hunger strike since November 14, 2013 seeking release of 6 Sikh political prisoners who are languishing in various jails in India despite having completed the terms of their sentences, has written a letter to Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav seeking release of Wariam Singh.

Wariam Singh was convicted by the court of Designated Judge/Session Judge at Pilibhit, U.P., on 10 January, 1994 and was sentenced to under section 120-B (IPC) for imprisonment for life and under section 3 TADA (P) Act for imprisonment for life and under section 4 of TADA (P) Act for imprisonment of 5 years besides of Rs. 1000/- (Rupees One Thousand only).

Wariam Singh was arrested on 17 April, 1990 and remained in police custody for 28 days. He was shifted to jail on 14 May 1990 and since then he remains confined in jail/s.

Wariam Singh in currently in Bans-Bareilly Jail in UP and has served more than 23 years in prison.

The letter by Bhai Gurbaksh Singh states that: “As per applicable jail manuals the appropriate government can grant permanent release to a life term convict after he/she has served 14 years in prison”.

“It is pertinent to note that his co-convict Major Singh, who was also sentenced by same court to undergo same sentence want granted permanent release from prison earlier this year by your government” it reads further.

Bhai Gurbkash Singh has stated in his letter that: [t]here is no post-conviction crime by Wariam Singh and his jail conduct is good.

“My concern are that Wariam Singh’s case is a fit case for permanent release from jail and I am on continuous hunger strike since November 14, 2013 at Gurdwara Amb Sahib (Mohali) Punjab seeking Wariam Singh’s release” he states.

“My fast unto death shall not end till the release of Wariam Singh” Bhai Gurbaksh Singh has told CM Akhilesh Yadav.

Sources told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) that copy of this letter was also sent to IGP (Jails) UP.

As per information the file of Wariam Singh is under processing and Amb Sahib morcha organizers are expecting his release in coming days.
