Jagdish Bhola Drug Case: Congress MP From Jalandhar Santokh Chaudhary Given Clean Chit By ED

April 6, 2017 | By

Chandigarh: As per the media reports available the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has given “clean chit” to the Congress party MP from Jalandhar constituency Santokh Chaudhary. This is the first major decision taken by the congress lead Capt Amarinder Singh government after it came to power last month, in the multi crore Jagdish Bhola drug racket case.

Earlier here on Tuesday the ED attached the properties of former minister in the SAD (Badal) BJP government Sarwan Singh Phillaur and his son, he was inducted in the congress party in November last after he left his parent party SAD (Badal) two months before the state assembly elections.Former chief parliamentary secretary (CPS) Avinash Chandar has also been named in  this Drug racket.

ED sleuths had found Santokh Chaudhary’s name in the list of those who received money from Goraya-based businessman Chunni Lal Gaba, a trader whose properties worth ₹150 crore have already been attached by the ED in the drug case.

Media sources indicate that keeping this diary as a base, the Jalandhar MP was grilled by ED deputy director Niranjan Singh in October 2015. Even as in Chunni Lal Gaba’s diary, the MP’s name was found as “recipient of ₹1 lakh for election fund”, the ED failed to establish any link between Santokh Chaudhary and Chunni Gaba.

However, sources said in Sarwan Singh Phillaur’s case, the Gaba family was found to be business partners in one firm whereas Avinash’s entry was found to be over ₹50 lakh. Moreover, Gaba’s son Gurmesh Gaba was made vice-president of the Gorya municipal council, a part of Phillaur constituency represented by Avinash, from 2012 to 2017.

“There was no evidence against Santokh Chaudhary and his family and the only entry in Gaba’s diary established that the MP received funds during the election period,” a quote from the statement of an ED official published in an English vernacular.

During the course of the investigation Congress leader Santokh Chaudhary was summoned only once whereas on the other hand Sarwan Singh Phillaur along with his son Damanveer Singh  and Avinash Chandar were summoned repeatedly in last two years.
