Jagtar Singh Jaggi Case: Court Ignores Complaint about ‘violation’ of meeting order; Remand Extended for 2 days

Ludhiana: The court of a judicial magistrate in Ludhiana today extended police remand of arrested U. K. citizen Jagtar Singh Jaggi for 2 more days. He was presented before the Sumit Sabharwal (JMIC)  in case FIR No. 218/17 (PS Salem Tabri).

The Ludhiana also presented Jimmy Singh @ Taljit Singh before the court presented of Rainder Singh Nagpal (JMIC) in case FIR no. 6/17 (PS Division No. 8). His police remand is extended for 3 more days.

FIR No. 218/17 (PS Salem Tabri) pertains to killing of Pastor Sultan Masih and FIR no. 6/17 (PS Division No. 8) pertains to killing of Shiv Sena activist Amit Sharma.

Defence lawyer Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur raised concerns over the attitude of judiciary for repeatedly accepting police’s plea for extension of remand.

“I had brought to the notice of the court that as per the directions of the Supreme Court of India [in case 2015 (1) SCC (Cr.) 398] the judges should not assume the role of “postman” so far as the police requests for remand are concerned and the judges should ‘apply their mind’ before accepting requests for extension of police remand”, he said.

“Unfortunately the judges seems to have assumed such role in these cases as the requests for extension of police remand are being entertained on same grounds without ‘application of mind’ “, he claimed.

COURT IGNORES THE VIOLATION OF JUDICIAL ORDER BY POLICE:

Advo. Jaspal Singh Majhpur said that he had brought the violation of court order directing the police to arrange for a meeting between representatives of British High Commission and Jagtar Singh Jaggi in privacy but the court ignored it.

“I brought it to the notice of the court that the police did allow the representatives to meet Jagtar Singh Jaggi on Nov. 24 after the court order and even when they were allowed to meet him on Nov. 25 the police violated the court order by denying privacy” he said while adding that two senior police official were present in the room where the meeting took place.

“It was a clear violation of court order but the court did not take its notice despite being brought to its notice”, he added.
