Leamington Sikh Gurdwara Incident: 54 persons released on bail by UK police

September 12, 2016 | By

London: The Warwickshire Leamington Spa police have release 54 Sikh youth who were arrested on the allegations of trespassing from a Gurdwara Sahib in Leamington yesterday.

As per a release issued by the Federation of Sikh Organisations UK, local Sikh sangat and representatives of Sikh bodies staged a protest outside the police station to protest against arrest of Sikhs, who were ‘protesting peacefully’.

“In wake of protest by the Sikh sangat, the police have released 54 Sikhs on bail”, reads a statement by FSO, UK.

The arrested persons were reportedly opposing the Anand Karaj  of an ‘interfaith’ couple.

Notably, 55 persons were arrested by the police on complaint of the Gurdwara management committee. While 54 persons were released on bail bonds, one persons who has not revealed his identity was still in police custody.

The FSO UK has condemned the local management committee for making a ‘false’ complaint of trespass. FSO says that the Gurdwara was a public place and the complaint of trespass was not maintainable.

Earlier the Sikh Federation UK extended its support to the arrested persons (read full statement by Sikh Federation UK).
