Punjab Govt. Notified New DSPs and SPs for Recently Created Investigation Cadre Posts

Chandigarh: The Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, has notified the appointment of the DSPs and SPs for the recently created posts in the investigation cadre, separated from the Law & Order department of Punjab Police in line with the Indian Supreme Court orders on police reforms.

The names of the officers were notified on Saturday (March 9) night against the 108 posts of Deputy Superintendent of Police and 28 posts of Superintendent of Police, created on February 8, 2019 for effective supervision of investigations.

A statement issued by Public Relations Department of the Punjab government says: “a Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) meeting for screening eligible Inspectors for promotion to the rank of DSP was held on February 22, 2019, and in pursuance, 163 Inspectors were promoted to the rank of DSP on March 5, 2019. Another 57 DSPs were placed as officiating Superintendent of Police (SP) on March 5, 2019, after screening by a Departmental Screening Committee (DSC) on December 28, 2018”.

“The SPs have been posted in every district and commissionerate for looking after the work of Punjab Bureau of Investigations, Organized Crime & Narcotics. The aim is to ensure focused attention on investigations, organized crime and the anti-drug drive of the state government”, the statement reads.

According to the statement “[t]he state government has also posted DSPs to look after specialized crime investigations, including the heads of Major Crimes, Crime Against Property, Crime Against Women & Children, Special Crime, Financial Crime, Technical Support & Forensics, Anti-Narcotics, Criminal Groups and Cyber Crime & Cyber Forensics. DSPs have also been posted to supervise the functioning of Command Centers and the Emergency Response System”.

The statement claims that this is the first time in the country that gazetted officers have been specifically posted in every district and police commissionerate, and assigned specialized crimes to focus upon.

“This innovation would effectively ensure the separation of investigation function of the police from the law & order function, go a long way in implementing the Supreme Court directions and, improve the quality of investigations”, it claimed further.
