Sayed Ali Shah Geelani Step Down As Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Chief, Ashraf Sehrai To Replace Him

Srinagar: As per the media reports veteran leader and chairman of pro-freedom group Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Sayed Ali Shah Geelani on Monday,  resigned from his position. He served at this position for 18 years.

It is said that Senior Hurriyat leader Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai will succeed SAS Geelani as the chairman of the party.

The Tehreek-e-Hurriyat led by Syed Ali Geelani today held a meeting at its office in Srinagar and elected senior member Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai as the party chairman, reads the statement of party spokesman published in Greater Kashmir (GK).

His successor Sehrai is a longtime associate of SAS Geelani and hails from north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

SAS Geelani is are one of key figures among pro-freedom leadership in the Kashmir valley, and has been vocal on advocating Kashmiri self-determination.

A three-time MLA from the Sopore constituency (1972, 1977 and 1987),  he was earlier a member of Jamaat-e-Islami, but later found his own party in 2003.
