SGPC Repeats Indian Nationalistic Rehtoric about Martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji

October 2, 2017 | By

Patiala: The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC), in a written release issued from Patiala on Sunday (Oct. 1), repeated Indian nationalistic rhetoric about Shaheedi of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. The SGPC referred to Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji as “Hind Di Chaddar” (Protector of the Hind/India) which puts Indian nationalistic shadow on the Shaheedi of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.

Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji had attained martyrdom to put estoppel on atrocities by Mughal rulers on the Hindu population who were being forcibly converted to Islam. Indian nationalists and Hindutavis use this historical reference to serve their agendas. Indian nationalists use it to support their nationalistic agenda which is nothing more than a masked version of Hindutva nationalism. This historical reference is also misused to forge the sense of enmity between Sikhs and Muslims. However, the Sikh Gurus have clearly envisioned the principal of “Maanas Ki Jaat Sabhie Eke Pehchanbo” (consider all humanity as one).

Given the universal nature of the cause for which Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji had attained Shaheedi/Martyrdom, he was referred as “Jagat Di Chaddar”, which has its source in historical texts like: “ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਭਏ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ – ਸਗਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਿ ਪੈ ਢਾਪੀ ਚਾਦਰ। ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕੀ ਜਿਨ ਕਲ ਰਾਖੀ। ਅਟਲ ਕਰੀ ਕਲਜੁਗ ਮਹਿੰ ਸਾਖੀ।” (Sri Gur Sohba, Kavi Senapat). This reference rightly symbolises the universal vastness of Guru Sahib’s Shaheedi where as the reference used by SGPC (Hind Di Chaddar) attempts to confine the Martyrdom of Guru Sahib to a particular geography and at the same time makes it vulnerable to misuse by a particular ideology.

Nagar Kirtan Begins:

As per the press release, the SGPC is organising a Nagar Kirtan to mark Parkash Gurpurab of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. The Nagar Kirtan began on Sunday from Gurdwara Novin Patshahi, Bahadurgarh Sahib and it would conclude today (Monday, Oct. 2) at Gurdwara Moti Bagh Sahib, Patiala. Speaking on this occasion SGPC president Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar said that the Sikh nation holds worthy heritage and despite being a tiny minority the unique Sikh identity would last eternally in the world.
