Sikh groups want community members in UK to contend in polls; No help required from groups like DSGMC: Sikh Fed UK

March 8, 2015 | By

London: Announcement by some Sikh organizations in India to motivate and extend support to community members to participate in the UK general elections has not impressed the Sikh Federation, UK.

The UK Sikh body – which has for the first time launched a Sikh manifesto targeting 50 key seats to ‘shape elections’ – has advised Indian Sikh bodies to stay out of Britain’s polls and set their house in order first, notes a Times of India (TOI) news report.

‘The DSGMC are simply opportunists and jokers. They do not have a clue about UK elections and how you need to plan years in advance to get Sikh candidates selected by parties and then into winnable constituencies. You cannot do this in a few weeks – this is not elections India style! They should read the Sikh Manifesto and learn something and not waste the time and money of the Delhi Sangat by sending delegations to the UK every time we do something positive and grab the headlines’m, said Bhai Narinderjit Singh, General Secretary of the Sikh Federation (UK), former Mayor for Gravesham and Kent County Councillor.

Bhai Dabinderjit Singh OBE, Principal Adviser to the Sikh Federation (UK) said ‘[t]he DSGMC and AISSF should sort things out in India and keep out of UK elections. Sikhs in the UK have shown they are much more capable than their counterparts on securing Sikh rights than those in India. Why do they not launch a massive campaign to address Article 25 of the Indian Constitution. Also as Rajnath Singh has referred to the events of 1984 as Genocide they should be demanding not only action by the Modi government, but also appealing for a UN-led investigation given the past failings of the Indian Government over 30 years.’

Bhai Amrik Singh, Chair of the Sikh Federation (UK) said: ‘The Sikh Federation (UK) and Sikh Network are leading the way with the Sikh Manifesto, meetings with the leaders of the main political parties and interaction with over 300 MPs and Parliamentary candidates. They just want to get on the Sikh Manifesto bandwagon on the eve of the British elections as we are getting widespread support and publicity. The DSGMC should also clarify its position on the application of self determination to the Sikhs and the specifics set out on this in section 10 of the Sikh Manifesto because in the past the Sikhs Diaspora has sent them into hiding and eventually packing for lacking the vision to see this is our birth right stipulated by our Gurus.’
