On 6 October 2022, Sikh bodies led by Panjaab Lawyers questioned Patiala District Magistrate regarding undue delay in Bhai Gurmeet Singh's case for premature release. Being District Magistrate of Bhai Gurmeet Singh's home down, Patiala Deputy Commissioner was required to send a mandatory report to Chandigarh administration as the later is considering Bhai Gurmeet Singh's case for premature release on the directions of Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The Government of India (GoI) last Saturday (Sept. 28) announced that it has decided to grant premature release to 8 out of 22 Sikh political prisoners who were sentenced to imprisonment for life and are confined in various jails across the Indian sub-continent.
Chandigarh: Sikh political prisoner Bhai Gurmit Singh was reportedly released yesterday from Chandigarh Model Jail (Burail) on 28 days parole. Bhai Gurmit Singh came out of jail at. around 7:45 pm. He was received outside the jail by his mother Mata Surjit Kaur, sisters Manjit Kaur and Varinder Kaur, Sikh leader Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema, Kumikar Singh, Bibi Kulbir Kaur Dhami (Guru Asra Trust), Gurcharan Singh and Surjit Singh.

Chandigarh/ Patiala (January 24, 2014): It is learnt that on the completion of his 28-day parole period, Sikh political prisoner Bhai Gurmeet Singh returned to the Burail Model Jail, Chandigarh, on January 23, 2014. He reportedly reached the jail at 3 pm.
