Ludhiana, Punjab (April 06, 2011): As per media reports eighteen administrative sub-units called blocks have been notified by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) banning any new bores for drawing underground water in Punjab. As per information Ludhiana tops the list and worst affected is Sangrur district where the board has notified 8 blocks for banning new bores. Punjab has total 137 blocks and around 100 of these are already been listed as dark zones due to over exploitation of underground water.

In a statement issued under the signatures of Panch Pardhani Secretary General, Harpal Singh Cheema, it is claimed that Section 5 adversely affects the interests and ‘riparian rights’ of the State, as it legalizes the alleged illegal allocation of river waters of Satluj-Beas-Ravi, to the States of Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi.
