Tensions Prevail in Phagwara After Hindutva Outfits Oppose Chhabil by Sikhs

June 5, 2017 | By

Phagwara: Tension reportedly gripped Phagwara on Monday after some Hindutva outfits opposed a Chhabil by Sikhs. The Chhabil (free distribution of drinking water for all without any discrimination) was being held in the memory of Sikh Shaheeds who sacrified their lives while defending the Darbar Sahib and Akal Takht Sahib during June 1984 Ghallughara when Indian Army had attacked the Darbar Sahib complex and other Sikh Gurdwaras in Punjab and neighbouring states.

Police took out flag march in Phagwara on Sunday (June 04)

The town was expecting tensions as Hindtuva outfits had placed hoardings with photo of slain Indian Army chief Arun Vaidya who was responsible for launching Indian Army’s attack on Darbar Sahib in June 1984 and was later executed by Sikh fighters Bhai Harjinder Singh Jinda and Bhai Sukhdev Singh Sukha. One of the two small hoardings placed by Hindutva outfits in Hanuman Garhi area, considered to be strong hold of Hindutva outfits in Phagwara, also carries a photograph of former Punjab DGP KPS Gill who is regarding as ‘Butcher of Punjab’ for his role in committing brutal ‘crimes against humanity’ in Punjab.

Anticipating a face-off between Sikh and Hindu groups, police which held a meeting of a peace committee on Saturday, took out a flag march on Sunday, notes a report in Times of India (ToI).
