UK Citizen Jagtar Singh Jaggi Allegedly Tortured in Punjab Police Custody; Lawyer Seeks Medical Examination; Remand Extended for 3 more days

Moga/ Ludhiana: Arrested UK citizen Jagtar Singh Johal alias Jaggi was produced in the court of Pushpinder Singh, Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate, Baghapurana today, who extended his police remand for 3 more days. The police had demanded extension of his police remand for 10 more days to recover his passport. Defence council Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur submitted a receipt of his passport in the court informing the court that his passport is already submitted with the British High Commission. The court asked the police verify the fact of submission of the passport from British High Commission in Delhi.

The magistrate granted permission for legal meeting with Jagtar Singh Jaggi from 8pm to 9 pm daily.

Jagtar Singh Jaggi’s council Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur claimed that Jagtar Singh Jaggi told him that he was given third degree torture in custody by the police.

“Jaggi told me that he was tortured physically and mentally as his legs were forcibly stretched beyond limits and he was given electric shorts on nipples, ears and private organ”, Advo. Jaspal Singh Manjhpur said in a written communication with Sikh Siyasat News (SSN).

“We have moved an application in the court seeking Jagtar Singh Jaggi‘s medical examination by a medical board comprising at least three doctors and medical experts. The court has accepted the application and a notice is issued to Punjab government to file reply on 17 November” he added.

Talking to Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur said that though Jaggi was (allegedly) tortured by the police, but in general he was in Charhdikala (High Spirits).

“He was also allowed by the court to meet his inlaws and maternal aunt with the permissions of the court. He was also given warm clothings by his relatives. His next court appearance is on November 17”, said Advo. J S Manjhpur.
