Understanding November 1984 Can Help Sikhs to Understand Show of Anti-Sikh & Anti-Gurdwara Hate 2024

On November 5, 2024, a memorial event was held in Rajouri Garden, Delhi, to mark the remembrance of the 1984 Sikh Genocide. During the event, Paramjit Singh Gazi delivered a speech addressing the tragic events of November 1984, shedding light on the systematic attempts by the Indian state to reframe this atrocity as mere “riots.” In his speech, Parmjeet Singh Gazi critically examined how the Indian state has propagated a narrative that downplays the scale and nature of the violence, categorizing it as a communal clash rather than acknowledging it as a state-sponsored genocide. He discussed how state-controlled media played a key role in suppressing the truth through censorship, which contributed to the marginalization of the Sikh community’s voices and the distortion of historical facts. Parmjeet Singh Gazi emphasized that the violence against Sikhs in 1984 was not a spontaneous outbreak of communal unrest, but a deliberate, orchestrated attack targeting an entire community. He called for recognition of the atrocities as a genocide and pointed out the failure of the Indian government to hold those responsible accountable. Despite the government’s ongoing efforts to silence the voices of Sikhs and suppress the truth, Gazi highlighted the persistent struggle of the Sikh community to seek justice, truth, and accountability. He referenced various reports and pieces of evidence that demonstrate the organized nature of the violence and the role of the state in facilitating it.
