Baba Daduwal’s kin moves heabus corpus in High Court; Notice to state over re-arrest

Faridkot, Punjab: A day after the police took Sikh preacher Baba Baljit Singh Daduwal into preventive custody after his release from Faridkot Jail, the Punjab and Haryana High Court issued a notice to the state government on heabus corpus moved by Baba Daduwal's father in law. Daduwal was to be released from the Faridkot Central Jail as he had secured bail from the High Court. But immediately after his release on October 09, the police took him into preventive custody claiming that “he was an imminent threat to peace”.

British Sikh School to open in Wolverhampton in September 2015

Wolverhampton, UK: A school for Sikhs is set to open in Wolverhampton as part of a new wave of free schools announced by the government. The British Sikh School is due to open its doors in September next year in Blakenhall, offering education to up to 840 pupils aged 11 to 19. It is one of 35 new free schools across England this week approved by Education Secretary Nicky Morgan - which will create more than 22,000 additional pupil places in the country.

Kultar’s Mime – A play that recreates the anti-Sikh violence of 1984

Sarbpreet Singh, a Sikh and a community activist in the ​Greater Boston area wrote a poem ​titled "Kultar's Mime" in 1990. Drawing on various sources and inspirations, ​such as the poem ‘In The City Of Slaughter’ by Jewish poet Hayim Nahman Bialik​ and verses from Bhai Gurdas, a 16th century Sikh poet, ​Singh wrote the poem to express his own reaction to the horrific violence of 1984. He named the poem "Kultar's Mime" after ​a character he read about in anthropologist Veena Das' book on the carnage survivors in Delhi.
