Kuldip Brar attack case: UK court rejects sentence appeal of four Sikhs

London, UK: The Court of Appeal has reportedly turned down a sentencing application from four Sikhs who were convicted of attacking former Indian Army officer Kuldip Brar. Lieutenant-General Kuldeep Singh Brar, 78, was attacked as he walked with his wife in central London in 2012.
Mandeep Singh Sandhu, 34, of Birmingham, Dilbag Singh, 37, and Harjit Kaur, 39, both from London, were convicted by the court while Barjinder Singh Sangha, 33, of Wolverhampton, had admitted the charge. Mandeep Singh Sandhu and Dilbag Singh were sentenced to 14 years, Harjit Kaur was jailed for 11 years while Barjinder Singh Sangha received a sentence of 10 years and six months.
Four Sikhs sentenced for attacking Kuldip Brar
A fifth person – Lakhbir Singh was convicted by the Southwark Crown Court, on March 21 (2014) for causing ‘grievous bodily harm’ with intent. He was awarded sentence to serve 10 years in prison.
There was criticism of UK court for awarding ‘harsh’ punishments to the convicts. Various Sikh bodies raised the concerns that court has acted harshly while granting sentences to the Sikhs convicted in this case.
The court of appeal today turned down the appeal filed by Mandeep Singh Sandhu, Dilbag Singh, Harjit Kaur and Barjinder Singh Sangha.
It is notable that Kuldip Brar had led June 1984 army offensive against the Sikhs that was code-named as ‘operation bluestar’. Indian army had attacked Darbar Sahib Amritsar and about 35 other Sikh Gurdwaras in June 1984. Kuldip Brar had led attack on Darbar Sahib. Thousands of Sikhs were killed in cold blood by Indian army at Darbar Sahib, which also destroyed the Akal Takht with tanks.
UK’s secret documents unclassified earlier this year had revealed that the Indian state had taken ‘advise’ of British government for making preparations of attack on Darbar Sahib. As per declassified British documents, UK’s secret service agent had helped Indian to draw plans of the army attack.
