Bapu Asa Singh’s condition improves; parole approved

Hoshiarpur, Punjab (July 21, 2013): Bapu Asa Singh, 94, who was sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment in a 1989 case on November 20, 2012 by a TADA court, was reportedly assaulted by jail inmates on June 17, 2013. He had to be hospitalized in wake of that assault. His condition is stable now.

Family members of Bapu Asa Singh informed Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) over phone that his parole has been approved by the Parole board.

“We hope that the necessary paper work shall be finish in two-three days and Bapu Ji shall be able to go home on parole”, said Baldev Singh Sahota, son-in-law of Bapu Asa Singh.

“He needs more care, as he is already 94” he added.

It is learnt that on July 17, 2013 the Supreme Court of India may hold hearing on appeal against conviction of Bapu Asa Singh. It must be noted under TADA there was no provision to file appeals in the High Court.

Bapu Asa Singh was a Sikh political activist who was booked by CBI in a 1989 bank robbery case. This robbery was conducted by Sikh militants in a Ludhiana based branch of Punjab National Bank.

Bapu Asa Singh stood on trial for 25 years and was convicted by the court along with 11 others.
