Narindra Modi – who is accused for Gujrat 2002 massacre of Muslim minority polpution

Gujrat, India (July 26, 2012): Narindra Modi, Cheif Minister of Gujrat State of India and development face of Hindutva ideology is reported to have stated that if he was guilty of collusion in the Gujarat massacre of Muslim minority population then he should be hanged.

Modi is reported to have said this in an interview with Shahid Siddiqui, editor of the Urdu weekly, Nai Dunyia.

“Whatever I had said at that time you can check that. In 2004, I had given an interview in which I had said why should I apologise. If my government had done this, I should be hanged in public in such a way that it remains a less the next 100 years so that nobody dares to do it (such a crime),” he has said in an interview published in Urdu weekly Nai Duniya.

It is worth noting that in March 2002 thousand of Muslims were massacred after the Godhra incident, in which 57 Hindu activists (Kar Seveks) who were returning from Ayodhya were burnt alive in a rail-coach fire incident. Narindra Modi who was Cheif minister of the state at that time is widely believed to have deliberately connived and actively colluded at the massacre of Muslims.

It is notable that certain circles of Indian media have started portraying Narindra Modi’s statement as a challenge for those accusing him as guilty for 2002 Gujrat genocide.

Indian Express reports: “In a sensational statement, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has thrown a challenge to all saying that if he is guilty of collusion in the Gujarat riots then he should be hanged – in 2002 thousands of minority community members were murdered by mobs that were not stopped by the administration or the police.”

“As then Chief Minister, Modi is widely blamed for his role during the riots – from collusion, to turning a blind eye. No one has yet been able to prove anything against Modi.” the Indian Express report further adds.

It is notable that this is not the only case in India where top-heads of the government are believed to have participated directly or indirectly in brutal massacre of minorities. In the events of Sikh genocide 1984 top leaders of the Congress were involved in genocidal violence against the Sikhs. These leaders where able to evade proper investigations/trials or punishment firstly due to the powerful position with in the state system and secondly due to state patronage. It is unfortunate that media is presenting state’s failure and conspiracy to justify the positions/statements of the culprits.
