Issue whip to support the bill to amend Article 25 of Indian Constitution: Peer Mohammad urge Indian PM

September 7, 2012 | By

Chandigarh (September 6, 2012): All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) demanded that PM Manmohan Singh should ensure support of UPA to the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2012 to amend the notorious Article 25 of the constitution, which is coming up before the Parliament. The private bill proposed by Dr. Ratan Singh Ajnala, MP, seeks to drop Explanation II in Article 25, which annexes Sikhism, Jainism and Buddhism with the Hindu religion.

National Commission to Review the Working of the Constitution (NCRWC) headed by the former Chief Justice of India, Justice M.N. Venkatachaliah has already recommended the Government of India to amend the Article 25 of the Constitution to restore the separate status of Sikhism.

Reminding that thousands of Sikhs laid their lives for India’s independence from British Rule which unfortunately resulted in extermination of separate status of Sikhism, usurping of Sikh rights and eventually to an open genocide of Sikhs in India, AISSF President Karnail Singh Peermohammad, urged PM Singh to issue a whip to Congress MPs to vote in support of “Constitutional Amendment Bill 2012” to ensure its passage from the Parliament. Amendment to Article 25 will restore the separate status of Sikhism, added Peermohammad.

It’s a shame that religion of Sikh Gurus is not granted separate status in the country where they laid their lives to protect Hinduism, stated Peermohammad. Federation Chief announced to approach the MPs from Congress, BJP, CPI, CPI(M), Janata Dal, Samajwadi Party and other parties in the parliament reminding them of the sacrifices of Sikh Gurus who laid their lives to defend the religious freedom in India and urging them to support the “Constitutional Amendment Bill 2012”.

Peer mohammad said that “if the parliament of India fails to amend the constitution to grant separate status to Sikhism, an international campaign will be launched to have plebiscite in India on this matter as per UN Convention on Civil and political rights”.
