KMO Seeks UN Secretary-General to Intervention for Independent Inquiry into June 1984 Attack and Human Rights Abuses by Indian Forces

October 3, 2018 | By

Amritsar: The Khalra Mission Organization, a Punjab based human rights group, has written a letter to United Nations’ Secretary-General António Guterres ahead of his visit to Darbar Sahib in Amritsar city of Punjab.

In its letter dated October 2, the KMO sought UN chief’s intervention for holding an independent inquiry into Indian army’s attack on Darbar Sahib in June 1984, killings of hundreds of Sikhs in cold blood by Indian forces during this attack and other human rights abuses committed by the Indian forces in 1980s and 1990s.

The letter notes that Indian forces killed thousands of Sikhs in fake encounters while subjecting them to enforced disappearances and even their dead bodies were not returned to their families. It states that these crimes against humanity were unearthed by S. Jaswant Singh Khalra who was later subjected to enforced disappearance by the Punjab police and was secretly and extra-judicially murdered.

UN chief, who is visiting the Indian subcontinent, is scheduled to visit the Darbar Sahib on Wednesday (Oct. 3, 2018).
