“Motherhood” – Another Animation Movie Violates Established Sikh Tradition

Chandigarh: The issue of visual representation of Sikh Gurus, families of the Sikh Gurus, Great GurSikhs and Sikh Shaheeds is once again in the discussion.

After the makers of animation movie Dastan-E-Miri-Piri released promo of the movie and announced 5 June as its release date, concerned Sikhs have raised demand to stop this film while making reference to established Sikh tradition that Sikh Gurus, Great GurSikhs and Sikh Shaheeds can not personified through human actors or as cartoon or animation characters.

While Sikhs holding demonstrations across various places in Punjab to against the release of Dastan-E-Miri-Piri film, it is learnt that another such movie depicting Mata Sahib Kaur Ji and Guru Gohind Singh Ji is also in pipeline.

The movie called “Motherhood: The Journey of Mata Sahib Kaur” terms Mata Sahib Kaur as a “super-heroine”.

The trailer of the movie is available on the internet, which shows that the movie violates the Sikh tradition and depicts Mata Sahib Kaur ji and Guru Sahib in cartoon/animation mode.

It may be recalled that it is an established Sikh tradition that personification or visual representation of Sikh Gurus in any form was not permissible but for past few years makers of cartoon or animation movies are violating this tradition.

The basis of the tradition is grounded in Gurbani itself which make it clear that Guru’s Shahbad is the ‘form’ of the Guru. But movies like Sahibzadey, Moola Khatri, Chaar Sahibzaade, Chaar Sahibzaade -2 Rise of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, Nanak Shah Fakir, Bhai Taru Singh Ji, Dastan-E-Miri-Piri and Motherhood violate Sikh principles and present Gurus in form of film characters.
