Organic Langar Marks Religious Fervour on Vaisakhi at Amritsar: EcoSikh

April 14, 2016 | By

Amritsar: EcoSikh and Akhand Kirtani Jatha (aka AKJ), two international organisations joined hands to serve Organic Langar during the ongoing Vaisakhi celebrations in various Gurdwaras at Amritsar from April 10th to 13th, 2016. Over 10,000 devotees partook in Langar at Baba Sewa Singh Hall at Sultanwind in Amritsar, daily. As a part of awareness, exhibition and sale of organic products like vegetables, pulses, flour, rice, jaggery and pickles were procured directly from farmers from Jalandhar for this mega celebration marking the birth of Khalsa.

It is noteworthy that EcoSikh is promoting “Nanak Kheti as Uttam Kheti” and undertaking efforts to promote organic farming amongst farmers by organising workshops at village level. Also, Sri Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar has shown way by serving organic langar and SGPC started organic farming at farm attached with the Gurdwara Gurusar Satlani Sahib near Attari. More Gurdwaras are following suit in India and worldwide. This would eventually lead to increase in demand of organic produce and would encourage farmers to take up organic farming.

Director of Datawind Amritsar and active woman leader of AKJ, Bibi Simran Kaur Ji who arranged organic langar with EcoSikh emphasized, “Mata Khivi Ji, wife of the second Sikh Guru, used to prepare the nutritious langar and serve to the devotees herself. This healthy diet enriched with keertan and devotion would benefit the body, mind and soul of the Sikhs. Following her footsteps, this is a start to revive the tradition of healthy and chemical-free langar.”

Said EcoSikh Amritsar Program Manager, Gurjit Singh, “The concept of organic langar is a way to create a direct connect between organic farmers and consumer in the religion sector and help promoting health in Sikh lifestyle. This would help curb lifestyle diseases such as Diabetes, BP as well as Cancer which is on rise amongst the cities of Punjab.”

Spokesperson of Akhan Kirtani Jatha, Bhai RP Singh commended the effort, “This is just the beginning. I appeal to entire AKJ sangat in 22 countries to support Guru Nanak’s way of farming by switching to healthy-pesticide-free food and safeguard the health of Sikh generations and the Mother Earth.”

A clarion call was given by EcoSikh President, Dr. Rajwant Singh USA, earlier this year to Gurdwaras worldwide to shift to organic ingredients to prepare Langar. This would have a ripple effect and would go a long way in tackling the financial crisis engulfing the farming community of Punjab as well as help in preserving the soils of Punjab.

S. Harbaksh Singh Shergill, Retired Block Agriculture Officer, Punjab Agro and an organic farmer explained that true farming is the one done by nature itself by means of birds, bees and insects, a farmer should only be a caretaker of Natural farm. At this event, President AKJ Bhai Bakshish Singh, Chairman Pingalwara, Rajbir Singh Ji, , Gunbir Singh of Eco-Amritsar, Manit Malhotra, President Amrit Punjab were present.
