Pilibhit – A Tail of Struggle Against State Terror After Fake Encounter of 11 Sikhs

August 17, 2020 | By

On 12 July 1992 the Uttar Pradesh police killed 11 Sikhs in a fake encounter. These Sikhs were on Yatra of Sikh Gurdwara Sahibs and were returning from Hazoor Sahib along with their families. When their rented bus reached Pilibhit, a police party surrounded the bus. They were taken to jungle where police separated men from women, children and elderly persons. While women, children and elderly people were sent to a nearby Gurdwara Sahib, Sikh men were taken to some unknown place and were killed in a fake encounter.

Bapu Jeet Singh of Satkoha’s newly wed son Haminder Singh Minta was also with this Sikh Jatha along with his wife. When Bapu Jeet Singh came to know about the incident he went to Pilibhit and found that his son was also killed by the police. He brought back his daughter in law.

Bapu Jeet Singh and his family, along with families of other Sikhs killed in this fake encounter pursued a legal battle for two and a half decades.

In 2016, about twenty five years after the incident 47 police personnel were convicted in this case. The period of mid-1980s to mid-1990s was marred by blatant human rights abuses and killings of Sikhs in fake encounters.

Pilibhit fake encounter case was one of the rarest cases that stood on trial for over two decades till final hearing, conviction and sentencing of the culprits. This short documentary tells the story of struggle of victim families against tyranny for 25 years.
