Police enters in Assam Gurdwara with Shoes; CM orders inquiry

August 25, 2015 | By

Guwahati, Assam: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has ordered an inquiry into an incident in Guwahati, where the police had entered into a Gurdwara Sahib with shoes. Official sources said that the Joint Commissioner of City Police will conduct the inquiry and submit report within 7 days.

“Maintaining sanctity of any religious institution or place is a topmost priority. The government will do everything possible to uphold the sanctity of the religious institutions of all faiths,” Gogoi said in a statement.

He also said that stern action would be taken if anyone was proved guilty.

A sub-inspector was placed under suspension for entering a Gurdwara Sahib without removing his shoes and for carrying weapons inside.

The police team comprising sub-inspector Dhanmoni Timung and three constables reached the Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Fancy Bazar in the wee hours of Saturday (Aug. 23) in search of Gurpreet Singh Uppal, also a local Aam Aadmi Party leader, following a complaint lodged against him by the managing director of an Assamese TV channel.

Uppal had allegedly shared the photo of the MD’s daughter on Facebook. In his post, Uppal had advised the news channel to first tell its MD’s daughter how to dress before lecturing other women.

A report of the TV channel had earlier sought to compare women in skimpy outfits with monkeys.

What angered the Sikhs was the fact that the policemen entered the gurdwara with weapons and did not even bother to remove their shoes. “We have suspended the sub-inspector and sent three constables to the barracks. We have also ordered a probe,” City Police Commissioner Mukesh Agarwal said. The Gurdwara Singh Sabha authorities were also miffed at the incident.
