Punjab Police Crackdown on Sikh leaders Intensifies; Many Arrested in police Raids

Chandigarh/ Amritsar: The Punjab police crackdown on Sikh leaders has intesified. The police is reported to have arrested many Sikh leaders belonging to Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar (Mann), United Akali Dal and other Sikh groups connected with the November 10 Sikh gathering at Talwandi Sabo.

As per recent media reports, the police have arrested Amrik Singh Nanagal (Amritsar district), Jarnail Singh Sakhira, Papalpreet Singh, Gurbachan Singh Pawar (Gurdaspur), Gursharan Singh Sohal and Kulwant Singh Kotla Gujjar (all belonging to the Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar); Sukhdev Singh Nagike (Damdami Taksal Ajnala), Jasbir Singh Mandiala; Parmjeet Singh Akali, Charanjit Singh and Dilbagh Singh; Malkit Singh Ajnala, United Akali Dal (UAD) chief Mohkam Singh, Satnam Singh Manawan, Parmjeet Singh Jejeani and Giani Dawinder Singh; Balbir Singh Muchhal; Baba Pritpal Singh (Kar Sewa); Mandeep Singh Kahlsa and Satikar Sabha leaders Suba Singh Ramrauni, Wariam Singh Sakhira, Tarlochan Singh Sohal, Sukhjinder SIngh King and Harwinder Singh Laadi.

The has conducted raids to arrest Sikh leaders and activists throughout Punjab. Many Sikh leaders have reportedly gone underground to avoid arrests.

Meanwhile, S. Simranjit Singh Mann has threatened self immolation to protest against such arrests (read in detail).
