Amritsar, Punjab (March 15, 2014): As per information a Sikh delegation led by activist Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa met Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh on March 14, 2014. The delegation that comprised 20-members including some Sikhs from Canada, urged Giani Gurbachan Singh to keep his promise regarding the permanent release of Sikh political prisoners who are being kept in prisons beyond the terms of their sentences.

After meeting Akal Takht Jathedar, Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa told media persons that the delegation had requested Giani Gurbachan Singh to fulfil the promises he had made when he (Gurbaksh Singh) was convinced to end his indefinite hunger strike last December.

It may be recalled that Gurbaksh Singh Khasla observed hunger strike for 45 days in November-December 2013 seeking release of six Sikh political prisoners who have completed mandatory terms of their sentences. Their release largely rests on the political calculations of respective governments, including the government of Gujrat, Uttar Pradesh, Karnatka, Government of India and Chandigarh administration. In some cases Punjab government is also involved being home state of these Sikh political prisoners or they are currently confined in Punjab’s jails.

“We told Jathedar Sahib that it was now his responsibility to ensure that those detainees were freed from jails permanently,” Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa added.

He said they had also told the Jathedar that if he could not take a stand on the issue, he should facilitate their meeting with Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

He said the Jathedar assured them of support but with a rider that the ongoing election process might affect the process.

He further said that Gaini Gurbachan Singh had also told them that he would try to arrange their meeting with the Chief Minister. He said they told him to redress the issue at the earliest so that they are not forced to resume their agitation.
