Sikh leaders tortured in police custody; Court extends custody of Bhai Daljit Singh & KS Barapind

Ludhiana/Phillaur (September 25, 2012): Akali Dal Panch Pardhani President Bhai Kulbir Singh Barapind was produced in Phillaur Court on September 25, 2012 by the police, where the police demanded his custody for some more days. The court is reported to have extended the remand of Barapind for one more day. He shall be reproduced in the court tomorrow i.e. September 26, 2012.
On the other hand Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu, former President of ADPP was also produced in Ludhiana court and his remand was extended by the court for two more days. He shall be reproduced in the court on September 27.
Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema, Senior Vice President of ADPP told media that both the leaders were physically and mentally tortured during five days of police remand.
“Both Bhai Daljit Singh and Kulbir Singh Barapind told me personally that they were subjected to third degree physical torture by the police during custody” said Advocate H. S. Cheema.
He further told that the police had lashed Explosive Act against ADPP leaders without any recovery and police had to admit this fact in the court but the police cited the ‘recovery’ of published books and magazines registered with Registrar of Newspapers, India & other public domain literature available on books-shops to demand further custody of Sikh leaders.
“If ‘Who Killed Karkare?’ is an anti-India book then firstly arrest the author who is a former Inspector General of Maharashra Police before arresting Bhai Kulbir Singh for possessing this book in his home” said Cheema.
He further told that Ludhiana police had taken Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur into custody. It is notable that Jaspal Singh Manjhpur is a practising lawyer who had appeared as Bhai Daljit Singh’s counsel on his last court appearance.
According to information provided by Dr. Ajit Singh Sidhu, father of Bhai Daljit Singh, one Paramjeet Singh Bunty a care taker of Bhai Daljit Singh’s ill mother is also supposed to have been picked up by the police. “Bunty had gone to market on a scooter for some work, we have found the scooter but there are no whereabouts of Bunty” Dr. Ajit Singh, a retired Punjab Agriculture University (PAU) Professor is reported to have told Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema over phone.
Harpal Singh Cheema and other leaders of Akali Dal Panch Pardhani alleged that Punjab government and Indian state are targeting political Sikh leadership and their families to suppress the political dissent.
It is notable that a former Judge, Justice Ajit Singh Bains yesterday (September 24, 2012) addressed a Press Conference at Chandigarh on this issue. While condemning the arrests he demanded to setup commission to inquire into the facts and fouls related to arrest of ADPP’s political leadership.
