Media Reports, Punjab Govt. Creating Confusion About GoI’s Announcement To Release of 8 Sikh Political Prisoners

The Government of India (GoI) last Saturday (Sept. 28) announced that it has decided to grant premature release to 8 out of 22 Sikh political prisoners who were sentenced to imprisonment for life and are confined in various jails across the Indian sub-continent.

Chandigarh: Sikh political prisoner Bhai Gurmit Singh was reportedly released yesterday from Chandigarh Model Jail (Burail) on 28 days parole. Bhai Gurmit Singh came out of jail at. around 7:45 pm. He was received outside the jail by his mother Mata Surjit Kaur, sisters Manjit Kaur and Varinder Kaur, Sikh leader Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema, Kumikar Singh, Bibi Kulbir Kaur Dhami (Guru Asra Trust), Gurcharan Singh and Surjit Singh.

Badal government yet to see legal aspects related to premature release of Sikh political prisoners

Chandigarh/ Punjab (February 24, 2014): Instead of making any concerte announcement about the permanent release of three Sikh political prisoners confined in Chandigarh Model Jail, Burrail the Punjab government said that it was looking to find out what could be legally done in these cases.
