New York/ New Delhi: US based human rights and advocacy group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) has criticized Indian government’s decision to give Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin of the Sikh genocide 1984 victims, saying compensation cannot be a substitute to the prosecution of the perpetrators.

Narendra Modi led BJP government in India yesterday announced to give Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin of 3,325 victims. The BJP’s announced to give compensation to the victims came a day before the 30th anniversary of the Sikh genocide 1984.

The Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) group said the grant of the compensation cannot be a substitute to the “prosecution of 1984 genocide perpetrators”.

A representative of SFJ told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) over phone that Sikhs from North America and victims and survivors of the Sikh genocide 1984 would converge on the UN headquarters on November 7, seeking UN intervention against continued denial of justice to the Sikhs in India.

SFJ will also submit a report to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon detailing the human rights abuses and killings during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
