A spokesman of the organisation said Navjot Kaur, who had impressed people through her poetry and speeches, would help raise awareness about sustainable agriculture, connect farmers directly to consumers and help the victim families of farmer suicides by raising funds for the Rescue A Family (RAF) project.

Mejinderpal Kaur, director of United Sikhs, said today, the organisation gave the first monthly pension of Rs 1,000 to 20 widows whose husbands ended their lives because of debt just a few months ago.

“Now, the total number of widows we support has reached 170,” she said.

“We aim to sponsor 1,000 farmer suicide pensions by 2019 to mark Guru Nanak Sahib’s birth anniversary that year,” said Mejinderpal Kaur, who has led the RAF project since 2010.

Initially, Navjot Kaur and United Sikhs RAF team will flag off a 6,000-km ‘Walk of Joy’ on July 15, which will cover 13 states, from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu to Amritsar over 10 months.

The ‘Walk of Joy’ will be led by David Atthowe and Yusep Sukmana of Nomadic Lion and co-organised by United Sikh.

It will raise awareness and funds for widows of suicide victims. Navjot Kaur will join the walk at various stages and particularly when it enters Punjab in 2018.
