Family Members, activists, human rights bodies condemn re-arrest of Irom Sharmila

August 22, 2014 | By

New Delhi/ Manipur, India (August 22, 2014): Human rights and anti-AFSPA activist Irom Chanu Sharmila’s re-arrest after two days freedom has invited criticism from all quarters. She was picked up ‘forcibly’ by Police from Imphal in Manipur. The Iron Lady of Manipur, who has been on fast for last 14 years, is supposed to have been picked up by the police for feeding her forcibly.

Irom Sharmila’s family and various civil rights groups have strongly condemned her re-arrest. Her family has alleged that the move to re-arrest her was “illegal” as a local court had earlier absolved her of the charge of trying to commit suicide by means of fasting.

“This is a case of illegal detention by the police against a peaceful protester who has spent 48 hours without food and water. The court has already released Sharmila then how can she be arrested again on the same charges? We strongly condemn this,” Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network founder Binalakshmi Nepram is reportedly to have said from Imphal.

Sharmila’s brother Irom Singhajit too condemned the police action and claimed that his sister had sustained a hand injury while she was being forcibly taken away.

“Her hand was hurt badly and a nail broke off. We are worried as her health is growing weak. We will consult our lawyer in the matter and plead before the court to release her again,” he said.

International Human Rights body Amnesty International India said: “In a disappointing return to old ways, #Manipur govt rearrested #IromSharmila instead of finding a way forward #AFSPA”.

“Instead of rethinking #AFSPA, #Manipur govt shamefully rearrests #IromSharmila. This farce must end”, reads another tweet by Amnesty International India (@aiindia).
