Kashmir Shuts Down to Protest Against Indian PM’s Visit

Chandigarh: Kashmiri people reportedly observed a complete shut down on Sunday (Feb. 3) as a token of protest against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. The Tribune has noted in one of its news reports that “[c]losed markets and deserted roads greeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his arrival in Srinagar as Kashmir observed a shutdown…”.

The call for the shutdown was given by pro-freedom Kashmiri leaders Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik.

While the shutdown hit normal life, the state suspended mobile internet service across the Valley during Narendra Modi’s visit.

An official said internet services were suspended as a precautionary measure around midnight.

As per reports, shops, business establishments and fuel stations were shut and public transport was off the roads in Srinagar. However, some private vehicles plied on city roads.

Media reports say that some pro-freedom Kashmiri leaders were placed under house arrest on Saturday (Feb. 02).
