Nabha/Patiala, PUNJAB (May 14, 2011): A youth leader of Shiromani Akali Dal (Panch Pardhani) and former President of Sikh Students Federation, Mandhir Singh, got released on bail from Maximum security jail Nabha today. Bail was granted to Mandhir Singh on last Wednesday by Mansa Court upon failure of prosecution to file chargesheet against him with in specified statutory limit of 90 days. Panch Pardhani is led by Bhai Daljeet Singh Bittu, who is currently lodged in Amritsar Jail, allegedly for political reasons.
Various leader of SAD (Panch Pardhani), Sikh Students Federation, Ek Noor Khalsa Fauj and other Sikh bodies welcomed Mandhir Singh outside Nabha Jail.
Mandhir Singh, who led the SSF for two years (2004-06), had contested Punjab Assembly’s election in 2007 from Balachaur seat over the ticket of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar). He was arrested back in January by Mansa police in Lilli Sharma Patwari murder case. Police had also linked his arrest to alleged attempts to propagate Khalistani ideology and taking control over Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee; but on the other hand Sikh organizations were alleging foul play of politics behind his arrest.
“His arrest was motivated by political considerations of Badal Dal in wake of upcoming SGPC elections. He was arrested by Mansa police in Lilli Sharma’s case on flimsy grounds” said Harpal Singh Cheema, Secretary General of Panch Pardhani.
“It was a more than eighteen months old case. Charge-sheet had already been filed, in this case, before the arrest of Mandhir Singh, and his name did not figure even once in it. All this shows that he is falsely framed in this case” he added.
On being contacted Advocate Ajit Singh Bhangu, counsel for Mandhir Singh, informed that suspicions raised by Mandhir’s arrest are now affirmed by failure of prosecution to charge him with in specified statuary period; therefore disapproving the plea of further detention of Mandhir Singh, the hon’ble Mansa court granted him bail.
Mandhir Singh, who visited nearby Sikh Gurudwara immediately after his released, said that he would continue to work for the betterment of the Sikhs as per the policies of his party.
