Narendra Modi’s presence in Melbourne (Australia) sparks protests

Melbourne, Australia: Hundreds of protesters gathered outside Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Nov. 18 to stage a protest against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi was here to attend a dinner hosted by Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot.

Narendra Modi, former Gujrat Chief Minister and current prime minister of India, faces allegations of perpetrating carnage of members of Muslim minority in Gujrat state during 2002. Around two thousand Muslims were massacred in Gujrat in 2002. Narendra Modi was CM of the state at that time. Moreover his party Bhartiya Janta Party is know for it’s Hindutva agenda and fascist tendencies.

Local sources told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) that protesters, mostly Sikhs, staged a protest outside Gate No. 2 of Melbourne Cricket Stadium located at Jolimont Street. Protesters were holding placards with slogans incriminating Narendra Modi.

Describing the purpose of the demonstration, a protester told Australian media that protest was being held to expose the ‘real face of Narendra Modi’.

“Now he is here, we are here to protest, we are here to let other people know, who is Modi… What’s real face of Modi”, a protester told ABC News 24.

SSN source said that supporters of Narendra Modi also gathered outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground to see him.

As the protesters were holding massive protest outside the main entrance to the MCS, the administration change it’s plans and took Narendra Modi to the stadium from some other entrance.

Whereas the protesters raised slogans against Narendra Modi, the supporters of controversial Indian Prime Minister also raised slogans in his favor.

A considerable number of police personnel were also present on the spot of protest. The police stood guard between the protesters and the Modi supporters.

No untoward incident was reported.
