One Year After Behbal Kalan Firing: Victim Families Still Waiting For Justice

Kapurthala: One year has passed but the family members of two Sikhs killed in police firing at Behbal Kalan village near Kotkapura on October 14, 2015 are still waiting for justice. Notably, the Punjab police had opened fire at Behbal Kalan village on Oct. 14 last year against local Sikhs who were staging a sit in protest on a link road leading to Behbal Kalan village. The protest was part of widespread agitation against outrageous incidents of beadbi of Guru Granth Sahib committed at Bargari village. Two persons Gurjeet Singh of Sarawan village and Krishan Bhagwan Singh of Niamiwala village killed in the police firing.

The state government had appointed an ‘inquiry commission’ led by retired justice Jora Singh failed to fix the responsibility of culprit cops for the firing incident. Even people had not expected anything positive from the commission as the practise of appointing commission in these cases is now widely recognised as a tactical exercise aimed at buying time to let the issue “cool down”.

Notably, a people’s inquiry commission headed by former Supreme Court judge justice Markandey Katju was also appointed by human rights groups. People’s commission in its report said that the Punjab police had opened unprovoked fire that had led to killing of two Sikhs.

As per media reports, Bhai Gurjeet Singh’s father Sadhu Singh and brother Jagdeep Singh have left their well-paying jobs in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya in African, and decided to permanently settle in Punjab.

“Getting justice for the killing of my son is now the only mission of my life. I can go to any extent for it. If need be, I’ll approach the courts and may oppose the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in the upcoming elections to achieve my goal of seeing the killers of my son behind the bars,” Sadhu Singh reportedly told Times of India (TOI).

“It is agonizing to know that even after a year of my son’s killing, the cops who fired at peacefully protesting villagers and killed Gurjeet Singh are roaming free,” Amarjit Kaur, mother of Bhai Gurjeet Singh reportedly said.

Bhai Gurjeet Singh’s father said that he has returned to Punjab after leaving his job in Nairobi and he will now ensure that his son’s killers are put behind bars.

“The very thought that the guilty are living peacefully while all our peace has been shattered riles me,” said Gurjeet Singh’s father.

Barely 5 km away, Krishan Singh’s wife Beerpal Kaur (42) too feels extremely dejected. Her husband was killed in police firing when had gone to feed the protesters.

“We want justice but government has denied it to us. My son was given a job of laboratory attendant in a government school, but he has not been given salary for the last six months. My father-in-law is 68 years old, but continues to take children in a rickety van to a school nearly 10km away at Bajakhana,” she reportedly told TOI.
