Police restores to firing in Jammu; One Sikh feared dead

Jammu: Jammu police’s move to remove posters related to “Ghallughara June 1984” has led to widespread tension and protests in Jammu. The Jammu police reportedly restored to firing gun fires and tear gas shells on June 04. As per unconfirmed reports one Sikh is feared dead. One of the organisers of 6 June Shaheedi Samagam in Jammu told Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) over phone that after yesterday’s incident the police had agreed to suspend SHO Kulvir Chaudhary who had removed hoarding of Ghallughara Samagam. The Shaheedi Samagam was to held at Ward Number 1 of Simbal Camp, Jammu on 6 June. This program is organized annually by Jammu’s Sikh sangat and Sikh Naujawan Sabha, Simbal Camp, Jammu.

He said that senior police and civil officers including ilaqa SP, SDM and Deputy Commissioner (DC), had assured Sikhs last evening that the administration won’t remove any posters of Shaheedi Samagam or Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, after which Sikhs had lifted up their dharna.

“But after that Jammu SSP Uttam Chand asked Sikhs to show permissions to hold Shaheedi Samagam and fix hoardings” he added.

“We told him that we are organizing this Shaheedi Samagam for last two decades and we need no permission to hold functions to remember our great martyrs. We also told him that person who fixes hoardings in this area has general permission to fix hoardings at specified places” he added.

He further said that the police had assured the Sikh community of Jammu last night that the matter was settled and no one would prevent us from holding the Shaheedi Samagam.

Sources said that the police started rounding up Sikh youth from Rani Bagh area this morning (on June 04).

When Sikhs came to know about police action youth began to gather to protest against the police action.

In order to suppress the protests, the police resorted to gun-fire, tear gas shells and lathi charge, sources told SSN.

Local Sikhs fear that one Sikh who is believed to have sustained bullet has died, although this news could not be confirmed as the person was hospitalised by the police. There is no official information in this regard.

The situation remains tense and the last updated received by SSN at the time of filing this report says that the police firing and Sikh protests continues.
