A moolnivasi youth, who was critically injured in firing by Hindutva groups on the issue of renaming chowk in Phagwara on April 13, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital last night.
Tension reportedly gripped Phagwara on Monday after some Hindutva outfits opposed a Chhabil by Sikhs held in the memory of Sikh Shaheeds of June 1984 Ghallughara.
Shiv Sena and other Hindutva outfit leaders have tendered an apology for the attack on Muslims in Phagwara in July. They have also assured not to issue any statement or resort to a protest that would hurt any community in the future.
The tension which has been simmering since Wednesday, after local Shiv Sena activists targeted some shops of Kashmiris and protested outside a mosque, turned into a clash on Friday near the mosque between Shiv Sena activists on one side and Muslims, Sikhs and Dalits on the other.
In the aftermath of yesterday's clash in Phagwara the Punjab police chief has reportedly placed local DSP Kanwalpreet Singh under suspension and attached him with Police Headquarters, Chandigarh on account of his failure to anticipate and handle the recent law & order situation in Phagwara.
