London, UK: The genocidal pogroms against the Sikh people in India in November 1984 left thousands dead. In many of the outer areas of the capital, New Delhi, whole neighbourhoods were wiped out. Women were raped in large numbers. Senior politicians of the Congress (I) party led mobs, assisted by the police and administration.
1984 remains one of the darkest years in modern Indian history. In June of that year, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ordered a military assault on the most significant religious center for the Sikhs, Darbar Sahib (i.e., the Golden Temple) in Amritsar, Punjab. The attack killed thousands of civilians. On October 31, 1984, Mrs. Gandhi was assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguards.

It is unfortunate to see Amnesty International India using term “riots” to refer to the systematic and widespread killings of the Sikhs in November 1984 in India. It's painful to see that a human rights body of an international standing was not able to see that the term 'riot' was most inappropriate term to refer to a series of organized massacres of a minority community.
New Delhi, India: Amnesty International India has launched a petition demanding the Government of India to reopen each of the November 1984 Sikh massacre related cases that were closed by the Delhi police. The human rights body has further demanded that an independent team should be formed to reinvestigate the cases, and all those responsible for the massacre– whether they are political leaders, police or government officials, should be brought to justice.
