Jalandhar, Punjab: Sikh organizations across the globe stands divided on the issue of amendments to the Nanakshahi Calendar. Whereas the SGPC has reportedly reverted back to Bikrami Calendar (a lunar calendar) this year, various Sikh organizations, majority of which comprises Sikh diaspora bodies, have taken a stand in favor of 'original' Nanakshahi calendar (a solar calendar).
Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee has expressed reservations on amended version of Nanakshahi Calendar recently released by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, Amritsar, India. The SGPC has released provisional calendar for the year 547 Nanakshahi (2015-16 AD).
Stating that the cat is out of the bag, the Dal Khalsa today fired a salvo against the SGPC accusing the so-called premier institution of the Sikhs for playing a fraud on Sikhs. The organization has stated that committing sin, the SGPC has killed Nanakshahi calendar systematically and buried it secretly.
There are reports that the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) may revert to Bikrami Calendar replacing out Nanakshahi Calendar. As per media reports SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar yesterday met Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh to seek clarity over the issue of calendar for the Sikh New Year beginning March 14, 2015.
Sikh bodies- Dal Khalsa and American Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (AGPC) have raised objections against penal announced by Giani Gurbachan Singh, Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib, on Nanakshahi Calendar issue. Terming it as "one-sided" move Dal Khalsa chief spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh said that the committee seems to have been formed with the sole motive reimposing 'Bikrami Calendar'.
Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh today announced to form an eighteen member committee to find solution of Nanakshahi Calendar issue. The decision reportedly taken in a meeting of five Sikh Jathedars.
Ahead of Takht Jathedar's meeting on Nanakshahi Calendar issue, former Takht Damdama Sahib Jathedar Balwant Singh Nandgarh, on March 08, said the views of those who didn’t follow the Sikh “rehat maryada” should not be given any importance while deliberating on the key issue of Nanakshahi calendar. He was apparently targeting the Sant Samaj ahead of the Sikh clergy meeting on March 09.
